Community Spay-Neuter Clinic (CSNC) of Topsham is already well known for its charitable service making spay-neuter services available to pet owners for whom cost is otherwise prohibitive. Next month, CSNC will take its commitment to the community and the environment a step further by reforming as a Benefit Corporation, a structure officially signed into law by Governor Mills in 2019. This new statute gives people who have an idea to improve the world through a business another choice.
Formed in 2010 with assistance from the Center for Wildlife Health Research, 501c3, CSNC has a mission to protect animals, both domestic and wild. Providing affordable spay-neuter to all pet owners regardless of income reduces pet homelessness, which in Maine is a significant problem for cats. For cats, this translates to fewer unwanted free-roaming populations, and improved protection for the wild birds, mammals and reptiles upon which they prey. Says Executive Director and Head Veterinarian Elizabeth Stone, DVM, MS, “The welfare of pets and the welfare of wildlife cannot be thought of independently”.
To date, CSNC has spayed and neutered over 35,000 pets in Maine, combining mobile clinics, MASH-style clinics and it’s brick-and-mortar clinic in Topsham to reach pet owners throughout Maine with this critical service. Says Dr. Stone, “It is now time to take a giant step forward and expand our approach to protecting wildlife. We will do this by considering a range of opportunities over the next months, that include monthly fundraisers, staff volunteerism, building sustainable practices, collaborating with innovative social science researchers, and more". For our kick-off event, August 1st we will start fundraising for the Saco River Wildlife Center, donating all proceeds from nail trims to the Center.
